Torres shines as Chelsea rout QPR
Fernando Torres scored his first Chelsea hat-trick as the Blues
thrashed Queens Park Rangers 6-1 to strengthen their bid for automatic
qualification for next season's Champions League.
Torres scored twice in a first half that saw Chelsea 4-0 up in the 25th
minute at Stamford Bridge, with Daniel Sturridge taking just 46 seconds
to open the scoring and Chelsea captain John Terry on target as well.
Spain striker Torres completed his treble in the 64th minute.
Florent Malouda made it 6-0 in the 80th minute, before Djibril Cisse scored for QPR six minutes from time at Stamford Bridge.
Victory took Champions League finalists Chelsea up into fifth place, two
points ahead of Tottenham, who were due to play relegation-threatened
Blackburn later on Sunday, and just a point behind fourth-placed
Newcastle.
Only the top four clubs at the end of the Premier League season are due
to qualify for next term's Champions League, although that number will
be reduced to three if Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in this season's
final.
Defeat left QPR above the relegation zone on goal difference alone, with two games of the season left.
Torres, who has struggled for much of his 15 months at Chelsea since his
British record £50 million ($81 million) move from Liverpool, said: "I
am very happy. I knew if I worked hard the goals would come. It's the
same for the team, we are playing more as a team now.
"Reaching the Champions League final was important, but we also want to
finish in the top four and we showed we were focused today from the
first minute after Daniel Sturridge's goal."
For Chelsea, who overcame the handicap of having Terry sent off to
record a remarkable 2-2 draw away to champions Barcelona on Tuesday that
saw them into the Champions League final, this win over their west
London rivals capped a memorable week.
It also set them up in style for Wednesday's match against Newcastle,
which precedes Chelsea's FA Cup final clash against Liverpool at Wembley
next weekend.
Sunday's game took place without the usual pre-match handshake ceremony
after concerns it could affect Terry's July 9 court case over
allegations he racially abused Ferdinand during QPR's victory over
Chelsea in October.
The Chelsea defender, who lost the England captaincy over the issue, has strongly denied wrongdoing.
Barely had the match kicked-off, then Sturridge had put Chelsea ahead
with a curling shot from the edge of the box before Terry, whose red
card on Tuesday means he will miss the Champions League final, made it
2-0 when he headed in Juan Mata's corner in the 13th minute.
Torres, who scored at the Camp Nou, added a third in the 19th minute
when he latched onto Salomon Kalou's pass and beat Paddy Kenny.
And six minutes later Spain striker Torres had his second goal and
Chelsea's fourth when he finished from close range after Nedum Onuoha's
back header was too strong for Kenny to hold.
Chelsea had to 'wait' until the 64th minutes for Torres to complete his
first hat-trick and 10 minutes from time Malouda made it 6-0.
Cisse pulled a goal back for QPR but it was scant consolation.

Three days to go, Fergie believes City threat here to stay
Sir Alex Ferguson has warned Manchester United that rivals Manchester
City are here to stay as the two clubs prepare for their Premier League
title duel on Monday.
After once dismissing the newly-rich City as "noisy neighbours,"
Ferguson believes the Abu Dhabi-owned club have emerged as the next
serious threat to United's dominance of the English footballing
landscape.
"We have to get used to playing Manchester City in important games," Ferguson told reporters. "They are not going away.
"If we are going to be contesting for league titles regularly – and I
think we will be doing – it will become just as important as the
Liverpool game.
"Maybe not in terms of emotion because the Liverpool-United games are
emotional. But there is certainly an importance which, at this moment in
time, supercedes the Liverpool games.
"They are our direct opponents now. Manchester City are up against us to
win titles. That is what our focus is on, the team who can stop us
winning."
The countdown to one of the most eagerly-awaited Manchester derbies of
all-time is under way, with leaders United three points clear of
second-placed City with three games of the season remaining.
In what has been an enthralling title race, City topped the table for
most of the campaign before United opened up an eight-point lead earlier
this month after winning eight league games in a row.
But a stuttering run of form by United, which included a 1-0 defeat at
relegation-threatened Wigan and a 4-4 home draw with Everton after
leading 4-2, has allowed their big-spending neighbours back in.
"It's not a cup final because there are games to go after it, but it's
an important game and I think it could decide the title," Ferguson said.
"I don't even say I can look forward to it.
"But I'm up for it and I'm prepared for it and I think my players will be prepared for it, so hopefully we'll be ok."
Ferguson, who reported no fresh injury concerns, added: "I suppose when
the fixture came out at the start of the season all roads pointed to
this game. It was inevitable really.
"We're smarting from throwing that game away last week but in the context of our history we have always expected it.
"We make it hard for ourselves. Our poor supporters have been subjected
to that drama for years and years. God knows what they're like now, but
hopefully we'll make up for it on Monday."
City seriously embarrassed United 6-1 at Old Trafford in the league
earlier in the season, but Ferguson insists that will count for nothing
when the teams meet.
"We are where we are. It doesn't matter what's happened before, the
build-up to the game and who's dropped points and who hasn't dropped
points. It's really all down to this game.
"Whatever has happened in the past is in the past."
City manager Roberto Mancini, who has spent millions of pounds
assembling a team capable of winning the league, said last week that
United would win the title despite watching his side reduce the gap at
the top.
Ferguson said: "He probably wants to take pressure off his own players.
"It's not going to change our approach.
"We know the exact situation we're in. We're in a better postion than
Man City. They have to win. We can draw but my attitude will be trying
to win."
